Cheap Microfiber Cloths

The boom in popularity has inevitably led to an influx of cheap microfiber cloths, which are invariably lower quality. While at first glance it may be difficult to tell, the differences in absorbency and cleaning/polishing ability can be dramatic between different qualities of cloth.

There are many different ways of manufacturing Microfiber cloths, and some of the factors that can affect the quality of the finished item are as follows:

The mix of Polyester and Polyamide : typically 70- 80% Polyester is used, the remainder being Polyamide. Low quality Microfiber is generally made from 100% Polyester, which provides less absorbency.

The Knit: Different machines are used to weave the fibres in different ways, and the pattern a cloth is weaved in can affect it's characteristics.

Pile height: The height of the pile will affect the cleaning properties of the cloth

Thread split : Inexpensive products use microfiber thread that is not split. Top quality microfiber cloths absorb around 7 times their weight in waterdue to the fibers being split, which has the result of creating a larger surface area.

Cheap cloths are not split because the manufacturing equipment required to produce micro replication splitting is very expensive and not widely available.

Fibre density: Typically Microfibre density is in the range 90,000 to 225,000 fibres per aquare inch. Generally, the higher the fibre desnisty, the better the absorbency and cleaning performance.
